04-11-2022 - My first project

Hello world!

03-11-2022 - 1 year ago - 3m 18s
Hi there! Welcome to my new website.

As you might have guessed, I’m starting a blog about my writing. Yes, big step out of my comfort zone.

To address the elephant in the room: What do I know about writing? Not a lot, but I’m learning. I’ve been reading about the writing process for years and have made some attempts but I never seem to take it seriously enough to press through. This time I hope to do it differently by sharing everything while I create a story and by writing daily. I’m aiming to keep these posts short to about 3-5 minutes so they are easy to track. These will come online daily at 12PM (midday) and will contain links to all involved stories and chapters.

The idea for a blog mostly came from the book Show your Work by Austin Kleon, which is about showing your entire process to others, even the nasty parts. I’ll be doing that by making a daily writing commitment to write for about 1-2 hours and sharing my preparation, what I wrote (errors included), and how I felt about the session afterward. I will also collect the writing in the stories section for a normal reading session, but following the posts daily shows the exact writing process.

“Why English?” I read almost exclusively in English and well, it’s just better. Both for writing as for reaching others.

“What about selling these stories?” you might ask. I’ve thought about that but I don’t see myself selling anything without learning more first, I’m just not skilled enough at the moment. Keeping the story hidden on a folder on my computer will not help me. By sharing, I hope to enhance my learning process so someday I could write some of the bigger story ideas I have. Maybe even streamline/collect the process for others to use as well.

What can I offer you? I’m doing this foremost to get my writing habit going (and gain some early feedback) but I’m also hoping this could provide some insights for others. Writing, in any form, is never a clean process; This I learned from programming: you’ll write something today and come back to it a week from now and say: What idiot wrote this shit? Only after revisions, you’ll get something to be proud of.

I want to make this as interactive as possible for both sides, which is where my skills as a web developer come in handy. The website now mostly shows the work I have done with only some feedback forms for you as a reader, but I can always expand this with extra functionality, just about anything is possible. If you have any ideas about this, be sure to contact me! For now, I’ll use this first draft of the website to get started. But don’t go expecting some fancy-pants design, I focus on functionality.

Tomorrow’s post will be about the first project I want to write here: Kane’s Cases, a Suspense Comedy story where I will try to tackle some thriller/horror tropes with new and hopefully funny solutions. To set the scene, the first chapter will involve a massacre: a tree covered in pudding.

The next posts this week will give an introduction for this story and what I plan to do with it, so no actual writing yet. But I’ve already made some preparations for this story, which I will combine into a separate space called the creation process. I aim to keep nothing back in these so a little heads-up for spoilers if you go there. These will become available over the next days and will get linked from each post (to the right here; or at the top if you’re on a mobile device).

Why am I starting in the middle of the week? I ran late with development on the website but I wasn’t planning on sitting by for another few days.. this will work.
  • Thursday - Introduction + Inspiration KC
  • Friday - About Kane's Cases + Characters & Structure KC
  • Saturday - How I will write + Outline KC: The Farmhouse
  • Sunday - Plan W45 + Challenges & Plan KC
  • Monday - First writing session on KC: The Farmhouse
To read more about the process (or about me), you can read more on the about me page which I’ll update regularly.

If you’d like to join me in this endeavour, you can sign up for my daily or weekly mailing through the contact page. If you know someone else who might be interested in this, please share this with them. I’m mostly reaching out to my friends and family but I’m hoping to get more people involved.

I'd love to hear what you think about this. You can contact me directly through the form below and I'll get back to you as soon as possible.
Thanks for reading!
